Several companies offer high rates per mile but the truth of the matter is:

High rates per mile usually get NO back hauls / immediate turn around to next load.

In essence, if your a cargo van and you get long hauls at $1.00 per mile (which is well above the normal rate per mile) but you have to dead head all the way back to your home state to get your next load, your really only getting .50 cents per mile NOT the dollar you think your getting. This high rate per mile is to attract you and sign you on, but if you have no way of getting another load nearby where you dropped off or even remotely close, your destined for failure. No one can operate with such massive dead heading, your profit will soon disappear. It's not recommended that you (example) drive 60,000 miles a year and only being paid for half of them.

Same for trucks. If your getting an above average rate per mile like $1.85 per mile or more, but no back haul / next load, your really getting .925 per mile.
